The New Philadelphia Police Department is emphasizing the important of mental health care after receiving a call from a man stating he wanted to harm himself.
On Thursday, the 2:36pm caller informed dispatch that he was heavily armed, his wife was home, and he was unsure what he would do if law enforcement approached his residence in the 200 block of Kent Circle.
Dispatch contacted the wife, who advised the man was in mental distress. She exited the home safely.
Officers attempted to talk with the man via phone and get him mental health resources; however, gun fire was heard and the line disconnected.
New Philadelphia’s Special Response Team made entry, finding the man deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No one else was injured.
