Dover will now fund police academy training for new recruits who agree to work for the city for two years.
City council on Monday approved the expense – up to 15-thousand dollars per recruit.
Mayor Shane Gunnoe recommended it, noting 25 percent of the city’s police force is at or near retirement age.
Dover this year has already given its officers two dollar an hour raises, loosened age requirements, and softened its stance on facial hair and tattoos.
Still, two openings remain on the force.
The 2024 pay rate for Dover officers is 33-dollars and 24 cents.
