The American Red Cross honored a Dover Police Officer for saving a man’s life in August.
Local Red Cross Director Kim Kroh presented Patrolman Ryan Porter with the American Red Cross Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders for his actions on August 19th when he found Rick Schreiber unresponsive at his West Third Street home. She says Porter performed CPR for an “exhausting” amount of time as firefighters attempted to revive Schreiber with an AED.
The second shock from the AED was successful, and Schreiber survived. He was in the packed Council chambers Monday evening along with Porter’s family and fellow officers.
“If it wasn’t for Officer Porter, I wouldn’t be here and again I just want to thank you so much.”
Porter commended paramedics for their actions that day and says the reward is seeing Schreiber doing well.
“I was on cloud nine when I left the house because he had a pulse again, and it’s just kind of hard to explain that feeling.”
Dover Safety Director Bob Everett nominated Porter for the national award. The honor is for professional responders and healthcare professionals who perform lifesaving actions while on duty.
