Ila Lee Johnson Altier of New Philadelphia, formally of Tuscarawas, entered into the immediate presence of the savior on Sunday morning, January 12th, at Park Village Southside.
Born July 5, 1929, at her parent’s home in Tuscarawas, Ohio, she was the youngest child born to George Frederick and Nora Pearl (Metzger) Johnson.
Ila graduated from the former Tuscarawas Warwick High School where she was a member of the marching band. Following graduation, she attended Columbus Business School.
Ila worked as a secretary at Montgomery Ward and later for her brother, Dale, at Twin City Automotive in Uhrichsville. She was a lifetime member of the Sharon Moravian Church at Tuscarawas where she served as a member of the church choir, Ladies Aid Quilting Circle, Bible School Director, Board of Elders, and numerous terms as a Diener.
She married Leonard Anthony Altier on April 29, 1951, and they celebrated over 60 years of marriage before Leonard’s passing on December 21, 2011.
Surviving are her two daughters; Jill (Bill) Westbrook and Jodi (Blair) Hillyer; four grandchildren, Matthew (Hayley) Westbrook, Mark (Katie) Westbrook, Kristin (Casey) Pittis, and Michael Russell; six great-grandchildren, Quinn, Willow, Fallyn and Gordon Westbrook and Bridget and Jordan Pittis; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Ila was also preceded in death by two infant sisters, Dorothy and Marjorie Johnson; three sisters, Evelyn Klaserner, Eleanor Burmich. and Kathryn Heldt; and four brothers, Harold Metzger, Stanley Johnson, Dale Johnson, and Earl Johnson.
The Reverend Lloyd Gooden and The Rev. Darrell Johnson, Ila’s nephew, will lead a celebration of Ila’s life Friday, January 17th, at 1 p.m. in the Sharon Moravian Church where the family will receive friends from 11 – 1 prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with a luncheon reception in the church fellowship hall following the committal service. Those unable to attend are invited to share memories and condolences with the family by visiting the funeral home’s website.
