New Philadelphia firefighters say a downtown rental property fire serves as a reminder about the precautions needed with home-heating devices.
Chief Jim Parrish says the fire broke out in a basement in the 200 block of 5th street northwest early Tuesday evening when some boxes with clothes and Christmas decorations were placed too close to the boiler in the basement and ignited, with flames spreading to one of the rooms in the basement.
Parrish says heating sources like wood burners, gas furnaces, and boilers should have nothing placed within three feet of them while in use.
Nobody was injured in Tuesday’s incident, which resulted in about 30 thousand dollars in damage, mainly to the basement.
