The frigid weather kept New Philadelphia’s street and water departments busy last week.
Service director Ron McAbier says they had to repair three major leaks, two on the main that supplies water to a grocery store. It’s now on the city’s list of problem areas to address in the future.
The water department also received 14 calls about frozen pipes. Mcabier says that has nothing to do with the waterlines, which are buried too far underground to freeze.
“I want to ensure everybody it’s not in the city line. We’re four feet deep. It’s not freezing that deep. It’s in an area where it comes in to a basement, unheated, it freezes and then that burst your pipes inside typically.”
To help prevent pipes from freezing whenever the temperature drops, experts recommend letting faucets drip, opening cabinet doors beneath sinks, and disconnecting garden hoses.
