The Ohio Highway Patrol is reminding everyone about the state’s move over law.

New Philadelphia Post Sgt. Bill Bower says it requires drivers to get into the left lane when approaching any vehicle with flashing lights parked in the berm, or slow down and proceed with caution if that’s not possible.

The patrol says 55 of its cruisers were involved in crashes over the past four years because of drivers not complying with the law, resulting in two deaths and 29 injuries to the public and hurting 16 troopers.

Bower says it’s something they don’t take lightly, which is why individuals often see troopers monitoring work zones and backing each other up during traffic stops.

The fine for a first-time move over law violation is 300-dollars twice that of other traffic offenses. Repeat offenders and drivers with previous traffic citations can be fined as much as a thousand dollars and jailed for up to 60 days.
