The May primary is a week away. In Tuscarawas County, Tuesday, May 6th, will not be a very exciting Election Day for candidates – there are no opposed races.

Two local school districts are hoping for passage of transformative issues. In New Philadelphia, it’s Issue 10, a 72-million dollar bond issue to build a new elementary school. In Strasburg it’s Issue 11, a 10-million dollar bond issue to upgrade school athletic facilities.

The lack of candidates on the ballot had County Board of Elections Director Brian Swartzwelder thinking it would be a slow early voting period. However, the issues have apparently kept voters interested.

“It’s been steady. The turnouts been higher than I initially expected.”

The Board of Elections at the Courthouse in New Philadelphia will have extended hours this week to accommodate early voters. It will be open from 7:30 a.m. until at least 7:30 p.m. every weekday, and until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Weekend early voting hours are 8 to 4 Saturday and 1 to 5 Sunday. There is no early voting the Monday before the election.

Those who wish to vote by mail but don’t have a ballot should act fast. Requests are due Tuesday, April 29th at 8:30 p.m.
