A 29-year-old Dennison man had just minor injuries after the car he was driving was struck by a train in Uhrichsville Tuesday night.
Post Commander Lt. Johnnie Maier says the State Highway Patrol is still trying to figure out how the man didn’t see the train coming when he drove a 2013 Volkwagon Jetta across the tracks just after 10 p.m.
The railroad crossing at North Wardell Street is only marked by signage. There are no cross arms or flashing lights. Maier said the train had slowed in anticipation of the crossings and did not derail. It struck the Jetta on the passenger side. Maier says that, along with the vehicle’s safety features, helped prevent more serious injuries.
Uhrichsville police said the driver was able to call police himself. They say he appeared to be in shock and was transported to Union Hospital. The Jetta was totaled. Maier says the driver will likely receive a citation for failing to obey a traffic control device.
