The New Philadelphia State Highway Patrol Post is hosting an open house on Thursday, June 5th.

Trooper Nick Smith says the public can stop by and see the inner workings of the local post and speak with troopers.

“You can meet a recruiter, tour the patrol post, and see our multitude of vehicles that we use throughout our shifts.”

Smith adds this event also serves as a recruitment opportunity.

“Accepting applications for the Highway Patrol. Anyone between the ages of 20 and 39 can apply. Academy life is about 6 months long. We have multiple different specialist positions outside of the troopers working the road every day. We have our commercial section, our criminal patrol, which is our K9 handlers, we do have our own aviation section with multiple airplanes and helicopters that we use throughout the state.”

For Smith, he says working as a trooper provides different challenges each day.

“Every day is different. No two days are the same in this job. You never know what you’re going to get when you come to work and that’s what I love about it.”

The open house, from 11am to 3pm, will be at Post 79 located at 2454 East High Avenue in New Philadelphia.
