Members of the Ohio State Highway Patrol shared their love of the job during a Thursday open house at the New Philadelphia Post.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Brian Cannon responds to District 4 and 7 as a reconstructionist.

“We do any of the major crashes. We’ll come out and support the field post. We can also do crime scenes and how things unfolded. As a reconstructionist I like to be able to help out whenever people can’t figure out what’s going on help them figure it out and identify whatever I can help them with.”

Trooper Andrew English, an OSP recruiter, says open houses at local posts is a way for troopers to engage with the public and talk about hiring opportunities.

“It’s an opportunity to come in tour the post, see the patrol cars, speak with different sections as well as dispatchers. I believe a lot of people don’t realize the different specialist sections we have. Different career opportunities we have, state troopers that go out an enforce and handle crash investigations, we also have dispatchers, K9 handlers, an executive protection unit, aviation section, motorcycle unit, plain clothes investigators here at the Ohio State Highway Patrol.”

English joined OSP after obtaining a degree in criminal justice and a minor in psychology.

“I ultimately wanted to make a difference. I had friends and loved ones go down the path to addiction and I wanted to make that difference in communities. I was a K9 handler for about four and a half years and just switched to recruitment.”

Information about careers with OSP can be found on their website, www.statepatrol.ohio.gov.
