Sugarcreek firefighters say a two-vehicle crash led to a major gas leak and evacuation of a three-block area lasting nearly four hours Wednesday. Nobody became sick, there were no explosions.
This was near the state routes 39 and 93 intersection at 5 p.m. Fire Captain Austin Weaver says they arrived to find one car with minor damage sitting in the middle of the road, the other up against a house where it broke off the residential gas meter at the base, causing gas to spew into the air.
Weaver says firefighters started to evacuate the three-block area while waiting for Enbridge gas company workers to arrive.
Enbridge had the gas shut off around 7:20 p.m. They made the necessary repairs and gave the all-clear at 8:55 pm.
The work also involved underground repairs that had state route 39 closed during the evacuation. Nobody was seriously injured in the initial car crash. Weaver did not know what caused it to happen.
