Melvin Holmes Cox, 93, of Gnadenhutten died at home surrounded by his family Monday morning of September 29, 2025, following an extended illness.

On October 24, 1931, Mel was born to the late Charles E. and Grace J. (LaPorte) Cox in Newcomerstown, Ohio. After attending school up to the eighth grade, Mel went to work to help the family. At nineteen years old, Mel enlisted in the US Army and served in the Korean War. Once home from the army, he went back to work for General Tire (GenCorp, now closed) from where he retired after twenty-eight years.

A very active man, Mel was always keeping busy. He spent time working on and repairing small engines, riding his motorcycle, riding bicycles on the local bike trails, and going to car shows with his ’53 Olds Rocket, and ’28 Model A. He was also a member of the Gnadenhutten United Methodist Church.

On February 12, 1955, Mel married Dolores M. Williams, of the home, with whom he spent seventy years married to. He is also survived by a son, Scott A. (Kelly) Cox, grandchildren: Scott Cox II, Dustin (Danielle) Cox, and Heather (Gabe) Elder; great-grandchildren: Hannah, Cheyenne, Savannah, and Charlotte; Siblings: Marjorie Robinson, Dora McQuaid, Debbie (Bruce) Stephens, and David Cox; sister-in-law Joyce Cox, and many nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, Mel is preceded by brothers: Paul, Charles, and George; brothers-in-law: Charlie Robinson and Judd McQuaid; and sister-in-law Patricia Cox.

Following Mel’s wishes, no services will be held at this time and cremation was chosen. A memorial graveside service with military honors will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at 2:30 P.M. at the Gnadenhutten-Clay Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Ohio’s Hospice, or the Gnadenhutten United Methodist Church.
