The Sugarcreek Fire and Rescue Department is hoping to protect their community one smoke alarm at a time.

They are partnering with the American Red Cross for “Sound the Alarm” to deliver smoke detectors to a designated neighborhood.

Firefighter Zech Haynes says on Thursday Sugarcreek Fire will offer to install the free devices and provide safety information.

“At 10:00 is when we’re going to start the walk and it’s going to be one section of the village. We’re not able to canvas the entire village but we’re going to be up Main Street over to Church and Ronsan, Boston Street’s over there as well.”

Haynes encourages all household to install a working smoke alarm to reduce the risk of a fatal home fire.

“At a bare minimum is one per floor. I personally like to have one in just about every room, especially your high-volume rooms where there’s a lot of cooking going on or there’s a lot of electrical appliances, so basements, kitchens, garages, and at least in the main hallway on the floor where there’s most of the bedrooms.”

He says having a working smoke alarm can drastically reduce the risk of death in a home fire.

“55% decrease in the chances of a fatal fire, so it’s important for citizens to be aware of that and to check your smoke alarms regularly, put fresh batteries in if needed.”

Residents in need of a smoke alarm or installing one can reach out to their local fire department for assistance.
