Dover and New Philadelphia city leaders this week moved forward with plans to buy an armored vehicle for their police forces.

The two cities have a combined special response team, called a SWAT team in other places.

The cities’ safety directors agree that without an armored vehicle, that team is ill-equipped to handle the most dangerous calls. Dover Safety Director says the vehicle could also be used in neighboring communities.

The city councils this week approved a 50-50 split of the cost for the $382,000 Lenco Bearcat armored vehicle. New Philadelphia Safety Director Kevin Milligan expressed thanks to Dover officials.

The cities will take out a seven year-loan to pay for the vehicle, with each city paying 32,000 dollars each year of the loan. It will arrive in 2027.
