Fall time is mating season for deer causing more activity and sightings, but it’s also associated with collisions.

Multiple vehicle versus deer accidents were reported to the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office in October, and just on Tuesday, they had 5 reports in varying areas like US 36 in Port Washington, along US 250 in Uhrichsville and New Philadelphia, Crooked Run Road and in Stonecreek.

Traffic Safety Community Relations Manager with AAA Tiffany Stanley provides some safe driving tips.

“If you do see a deer on the side of the road slow down and avoid swerving. You don’t want to run into oncoming traffic or a tree off of the side of the road. If you do collide with the animal, stay in your vehicle, pull off the side of the road, call the police if your injured and if not report it to your insurance company right away.”

Stanley encourages motorists to put down the distractions.

“Put down the cell phones. Make sure you’re paying close attention to the road and constantly scanning the road ahead. Unfortunately, if you take your eyes off the road for just two seconds statistics show that you’re twice as like to have a crash, so it’s important to put away the distractions.”

Peak times for when deer are on the move is dusk and dawn.
