An 18-year-old Akron man arrested by U.S. Marshalls in New Philadelphia a week ago has been charged with murder in connection to a shooting that took place at an Airbnb rental house in Bath Township on November 2nd.
In addition, a 16-year-old also located at the Ray Avenue address was arrested days later and is now charged in connection with the shooting where eight other people were injured at a large birthday party gathering. A third 19-year-old suspect was arrested in Akron and is also charged with murder.
Bath Police Chief Vito Sinopoli announced the charges at a Friday press conference with Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.
“Derquan Edwards, 18 years of age, has been charged with one count of murder and nine counts of felonious assault. A 16-year-old male was charged with one count of delinquency to commit murder and nine counts of delinquency to commit felonious assault. Jashawn Stewart, 19 years of age, has been charged with one count of murder and nine counts of felonious assault.”
Sinopoli says Edwards was the first suspect located after a massive investigation involving a number of law enforcement agencies.
“The Bath Township Police Department, Akron Police Department, ATF, and US Marshalls first located and arrested Edwards at a residence in New Philadelphia on November 14th. That arrest stemmed from an Akron Police Department investigation of the theft of a firearm. Information and evidence obtained through the investigation substantiated investigators beliefs that Edwards was a participant in the Bath Township shooting. A juvenile was present with Edwards at the time of the arrest in New Philadelphia.”
All of the suspects remain in custody and additional charges are expected.
