Joanne R. Van Alstyne, age 93, of Dover, passed away Friday, December 12, 2025, in Ohio’s Hospice Truman House, New Philadelphia.
Born January 20, 1932, in Dover, she was the daughter of the late Carl F. and Valeria (Werner) Moser. Joanne graduated from Dover High School in 1950, and, on January 5, 1951, wed Walter E. Van Alstyne. The couple were parents to four daughters and shared 54 years of marriage prior to Walter’s passing on January 13, 2005. Joanne was employed by the Weinsz Motor Co. in Dover, and then, for 26 years, by Dover’s Reeves Steel Co. and its successor, Empire Detroit.
She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dover, and a life member of the Dover V.F.W. Auxiliary, and later, of the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Auxiliary. Joanne was also a long-time faithful volunteer for Mobile Meals of Dover-New Philadelphia. Some of her favorite pastimes were scrapbooking, birdwatching, and playing cards – canasta, euchre, and jass were favorites.
Joanne is survived by her daughters, Cynthia “Cindy” Powell of East Kelly, North Carolina, Diana Dorsey and Valeria “Jane” (Dr. Michael) Brown, both of Dover, and Jody Matics of Navarre; her grandchildren, James (Kasey) and Matthew (Kristina) Powell, Chad (Mandy) and Katie (Richard Bertka) Dorsey, Michael Brown, Lindsay (Joel) Blackburne, Abby (Matthew) Kinard, Jessica Matics Fisk, and Jennifer (Thomas) Wiseman; her sixteen great-grandchildren; and her nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Walter, Joanne was preceded in death by her grandson, Paul Powell, and her sisters and brother, Verna Mae Vierheller, Valeria “Betty” Rimer, and Karl Moser.
Services will be private; Joanne’s grandson, New Philadelphia Police Chaplain Chad Dorsey will officiate. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park. Joanne’s family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory be made to Truman House, the Tuscarawas County Humane Society, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, or Mobile Meals of Dover-New Philadelphia.
