State transportation officials are urging drivers to use extra caution on the roads Thursday morning as wintry conditions continue across eastern Ohio.

The Ohio Department of Transportation’s District 11 office in New Philadelphia reports that nearly 50 trucks are actively treating roadways for slick spots throughout the region. While air temperatures have risen slightly, officials warn that pavement temperatures remain below freezing in some areas, increasing the risk of black ice—especially on secondary roads, bridges, and overpasses.

Emergency management officials in Tuscarawas County are echoing those warnings, reminding residents to stay alert as cold, snow, and icy conditions persist. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time, maintain a safe following distance, and keep their vehicles fueled. Officials also recommend keeping emergency supplies in your car, including one or two blankets, in case of unexpected delays.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is advising people outdoors to dress in layers to stay warm. Wearing two to three layers, along with a hat, gloves, and waterproof boots, can help prevent cold-related illnesses during prolonged exposure to low temperatures.

Officials say staying prepared and taking precautions can make a big difference as winter weather continues to impact the region.

The National Weather Service issued an advisory from 7pm on Saturday through Monday at 1pm.
