Sugarcreek firefighters say the quick actions of a homeowner prevented a blaze from spreading.
They were called Monday at 1am to Township Road 447. Chief John Meek says the fire started after a pipe on a wood burner became too hot.
“Caught the two by four on fire and then started to spread up towards the rafters. Luckily the homeowners smoke detector went off.”
The detector was in the basement level. Upon being alerted and seeing the fire, Meek says the homeowner took immediate action.
“He was able to go outside quick, get the garden hose out of the garage, it wasn’t frozen, and it reached all the way down in the basement and he was able to extinguish the fire before we got to the residence.”
Meek notes the long unplowed driveway would have made it difficult for fire trucks and tankers to get to the home.
“We’ve noticed, if you have a long driveway and if you’re able to put those little markers along the side the driveway that really helps, especially if you haven’t had time to plow, we can see where the driveway is.”
He also encourages folks to stay home if they don’t have to go anywhere on this Monday.
