Tuscarawas County officials are welcoming the improved driving conditions as we move past winter storm Fern.

Sheriff Orvis Campbell says the roads looked a lot better by Monday afternoon, though many back roads and side streets still need work.

“There’s still a lot of roads that they’ve not been able to clear the entire width of the road, so it’s a little difficult making that left or right with all that snow piled up.”

Campbell says the county’s 9-1-1 center handled eight crash reports from Saturday night through Sunday, which he described as “extremely low” for a storm of this magnitude.

“I feel overall it was a very successful event for Tuscarawas County. I think the people took it very seriously and that makes a difference. The crashes related to the weather were just a great deal lower than we expected and I thank the public for that.”

The sheriff’s office also handled a higher-than-usual number of domestic violence calls during the 36 hours surrounding the storm.

“I’m not really sure why that was. People just arguing, stuck in the house maybe but nothing serious out of those.”

Campbell says he was also made aware of one cardiac-related medical incident believed to be connected to snow shoveling. He did not know the individual’s prognosis but believes the person is okay.
