Joe E. Mizer, 78, of New Philadelphia (formerly of Sugarcreek) passed away peacefully at the Truman Hospice House on March 8, 2026, following a 15-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born April 12, 1947, in Dover, he was the eldest child of the late Russell and Gladys Mizer. Joe was baptized and confirmed at the Evans Creek Lutheran Church and was raised on the family farm, where he developed the strong work ethic and a sense of responsibility that would define his life. He was a member of the final graduating class of Stonecreek High School.

Following graduation, Joe briefly worked at the Stone Creek Brick Company before being drafted into the United States Army, where he served as a cook and later as a security clerk. After his honorable discharge, he returned home and married Terry Levengood on June 1, 1968. Together they built a life rooted in family and shared 57 wonderful years of marriage while raising three children.

Joe retired from GTE North after 31 years as a telephone repairman, a job that allowed him to meet many people throughout the community. He later spent several years delivering parts for Harrison Auto Parts, where he became affectionately known by many as “NAPA Joe.”  Over the years, he could often be found enjoying a cup of coffee and conversation at many establishments during his work breaks. He served as a 4-H advisor and took great interest in the county’s goat program.  In recent years, one of his greatest joys was gathering with his former GTE coworkers for breakfast at Bob Evans.

In addition to his wife, Terry, he is survived by his three children: Kelli (Roman) Troyer of Sugarcreek, Chip (Amy) Mizer of Stone Creek, and Kristi (Jim) Lorenz of Baltic; his grandchildren, Scott (Allison) Troyer, Taylor (Nathan) Long, Mason, Evan, Justin, and Jordan Mizer, and Logan and Collin Lorenz; and his great-grandchildren, Ashtyn Troyer and Fen Troyer, who brought him much pride and joy.  He is also survived by his sister Sue (Ken) Tango of Dover and brother Jeff (Jody) Mizer of Coshocton.

Joe will be reunited in heaven with his parents and three infant siblings, Nancy, Lewis, and Thomas.

Cremation has been entrusted to Smith-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek. Friends may call on Saturday, March 14, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., with services beginning at 11:00 a.m. Military honors will follow, with a private family graveside service to be held afterward.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution in Joe’s name to Ohio’s Hospice of Tuscarawas County in appreciation of the compassionate care they provided.
