A tanker truck rollover east of Mineral City led to a potentially volatile hazmat situation Monday afternoon, but officials say the environmental impact ended up being minimal.

Emergency crews were called to Linden Tree Road after a Hilltop Energy truck carrying powdery ammonium nitrate – which is an explosive used in the mining industry – and some diesel fuel tipped over around 4 p.m.

County Hazmat Team member and Dover Fire Captain Mike Mossor says the chemicals largely remained separated during the spill, helping reduce the risk. He estimates there were several hundred pounds of ammonium nitrate in the road, possibly 7-10 gallons of diesel fuel, and 5 gallons of hydraulic oil spilled.

Teams worked for several hours to contain and remove the spill. A small amount of fuel did enter a roadside ditch leading to a nearby creek. Crews cleared the scene around 10 p.m.

The truck’s driver was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The cause of the accident wasn’t immediately known.
