New Philadelphia Police are sharing more details into last week’s arrest of 25-year-old Zachary Gill in connection with the alleged shooting of his girlfriend earlier this month.
Police Captain David Morris says the incident happened around 9:30 a.m. on May 22nd during an argument between the couple, when Gill allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired, striking the victim.
Morris says the police responded to the altercation but weren’t made fully aware of what had actually happened.
“We did receive a call in reference to that, and, at the time, there were no signs of a shooting, and the victim wasn’t acting like they were shot, or anything along the lines. They were just claiming it was a car issue.”
Morris says authorities only learned of the shooting four days later, when the victim sought medical treatment for what she claimed was an ankle injury.
“During treatment the hospital learned that she had a bullet wound, so they ended up calling the Dover Police Department because they were in Dover at the time getting treated. I believe they were shot through the hip and there was an exit wound out of their buttocks.”
Detectives obtained arrest and search warrants for Gill on multiple felony charges, including two counts of attempted murder and felonious assault.
They attempted to detain him at a 11th Street NW home but instead Gill was found Friday at a different address in New Philadelphia.
He is currently being held in the Tuscarawas County Jail and is expected to be arraigned this week.
