The weeks between Memorial Day and Labor Day are known as the 100 Deadliest Days as more crashes are seen during this time period.

Governor Mike DeWine hosted a press conference Monday, highlighting the more than 67,000 crashes that occurred on Ohio roads in 2025, resulting in 384 people being killed.

Among those was 28 teenagers. DeWine says with schools being out, young drivers have more time, leading to more driving, often times with friends in the vehicle.

Throughout the entirety of 2025, there were 540 fatal crashes that could have been avoided if an individual had made the decision not to drive impaired by drugs or alcohol.

“And we can change this. Most of these are occurring because of an error, because of a bad judgement, someone didn’t wear a seatbelt, someone is distracted driving in some way, so that’s the message today.”

This time of year is also prime motorcycle riding. Of those killed in 2025, 104 had been riding.

“We just ask anybody on a motorcycle please be careful and watch out. If you’re a driver, watch out for the motorcycle.”

Additionally, motorists are encouraged to take precautions in construction zones. According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, work zone crashes increased 11% in 2025. Approximately 34% of all work zone crashes are due to drivers following too close.
