A 19-year-old Amish man was injured Tuesday evening when his buggy was hit from behind by a car on Golf Course Road in Sugarcreek.

State Highway Patrol Sergeant Clinton Armstrong says James Yoder was flown to Akron General Hospital after the 5:30 p.m. crash. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Armstrong says 23-year-old Brandon Kiepper of Beach City failed to maintain an assured clear distance and struck the buggy from behind. Kiepper told investigators he was briefly distracted reaching for something inside his vehicle.

Kiepper was not injured. Armstrong says charges are pending but will likely include assured clear distance and distracted driving.

The crash caused major damage to the buggy, tearing off the left rear tire, axle, and part of the frame. The horse was not hurt.

Armstrong says the buggy and horse had been used earlier in the day to film scenes for the Sugarcreek Amish Mysteries TV series and were headed back to The Farm at Walnut Creek when the crash happened.
