Dogs can get easily scared this holiday weekend with fireworks, and the most common response is for dogs to run away when they are spooked.

The Tuscarawas County Dog Pound advises pet owners to make sure they are prepared.

The Facility and Adoption specialist Beth Lewis says they see more dogs coming into the pound during this time.

“Every year during the holiday weekend there is an increase, but the most important thing is always keeping some sort of identification on your dog.”

She says not to leave dogs outside unattended, to check any fences for holes, check tie-out cables and to make sure they are wearing a collar.

No one thinks their dog will be the one that gets loose due to fireworks, but if everyone plans for the worst-case scenario, the dogs will be able to get home a lot quicker.)”

If a dog goes missing, report it right away to the dog pound or local police so they can be returned quickly if found.

She also mentions that this 4th of July will bring in the heat, so it’s important that all pets and other animals have access to plenty of water, shade and for owners to watch out for hot concrete.
