Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell is sharing more details about Saturday morning’s standoff in Midvale.
It ended with a suspect surrendering, and no one hurt.
The sheriff’s office says it began just before 6 a.m. as a welfare check at a Main Street home, where a man had reportedly been drinking and making concerning comments. Deputies found a spent shell casing on the porch and learned the man had fired a gun near his children.
Campbell says the standoff ended around 7:30 a.m. when SWAT members moved in, found the man, and took him into custody without incident.
A reverse 911 alert went out to people within a half-mile of the home, asking them to shelter in place. The alert was lifted about an hour later.
Campbell confirmed the suspect’s identity as 42-year-old Josh Shank. He remains in the Tuscarawas County Jail. The prosecutor’s office could file charges today, including child endangering, having weapons under disability because of a prior criminal record, and handling a firearm while intoxicated.
