New Philadelphia could soon join other local municipalities that have been setting new rules for e-bikes, e-scooters, and other micro-mobility vehicles.

Safety Director Kevin Milligan told city council this week that proposed legislation could be introduced in the next few weeks. He has been reviewing draft language with Police Chief Tessa Pohovey, and Law Director Marvin Fete.

Milligan says he frequently sees e-riders traveling the wrong direction or failing to follow existing traffic rules, so he’s reminding riders that current law already requires bicyclists and e-bike users operating on city streets to obey traffic laws.

He’s also urging parents for cooperation to teach young riders about bicycle safety and encouraged all riders to wear helmets.

Milligan says city officials have been studying how other Ohio communities regulate the vehicles and want to develop rules that are both fair and enforceable.
