The American Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis, the second time in history. All blood types are needed, but Type O is at the forefront of this emergency.

While the concern with providing blood might be placed mainly on hospitals and emergency rooms outside factors could strongly affect their supplies.

Less blood donations are typical with people enjoying the summer months, but this year’s extreme heat, poor air quality, and widespread foodborne illness are contributing to the reason why donations are not keeping up with demand.

Residents can help stabilize the blood supply by donating. Tuscarawas County has five opportunities.
