Tuscarawas County emergency officials say no one was injured after a shelter-in-place order was issued Thursday for four homes following a natural gas leak at a well.
The leak was discovered shortly before 11am near the 2000 block of Scenic View Road Southwest in York Township.
Residents within a half mile of the well were told to remain indoors, shut off their air conditioning, close their windows and avoid smoking.
EMA Director Jennifer James says the order was issued by the York Township fire chief, and alerts were relayed through the sheriff’s office. She says some residents mistakenly thought the order was more widespread after seeing the alert on television.
The York Township Fire Department responded, and the well company made repairs. The order was lifted before 3 p.m.
Officials have not said what caused the leak or when it began.
