Dover firefighters say no one got sick and no injuries were reported after a gas leak forced Tuscarawas Central Catholic elementary to evacuate Monday morning.

Captain Joe Minocchi says the call came in at 7:50 am for the smell of gas in the school’s kitchen and gym area. He says crews arrived within minutes.

Minocchi says firefighters shut off and isolated the gas meter to keep the situation from getting worse. They also opened doors to ventilate the building while students moved across the street to St. Joseph Church.

Crews later traced the leak to a stovetop oven. Enbridge Gas responded to work with school custodians to address the problem with the appliance.

Minocchi adds there could be multiple potential causes.  Firefighters were on scene for about two hours.
