The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office says they’re seeing an increase in scam attempts where individuals are impersonating law enforcement officers.
In the latest attempt, scammers are using partial names of actual deputies from the local sheriff’s office. The claim is typically a missed jury duty or court for various reasons. A Sheriff’s Office post notes the fraudster may also claim there is an active warrant that must be addressed immediately to avoid arrest.
Since these calls sound professional and the scammer provides convincing details, officials say anyone receiving these types of calls should stop, take a breath, hang up, and verify.
As a reminder, a sheriff’s office will never call someone demanding payment to clear an arrest warrant. Government agencies will also never ask someone to purchase gift cards, send cryptocurrency, wire money, or provide financial information over the phone to avoid arrest.
