Dover has taken what officials call a big step toward the completion of the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail.

City officials have begun the design process for the portion of the path that goes through the city and its riverside park.

Mayor Shane Gunnoe says they have hired the Environmental Design Group after receiving a 200-thousand dollar state grant. However, completion of the trail is still at least three years away. Gunnoe says ODOT is providing the majority of the funding for the project.

The Towpath Trail extends 93 miles from Cleveland to Zoar.

The state has budgeted 4.8 million dollars in 2028 to pay for the final seven miles of the biking and walking path through Tuscarawas County.
