Philip D. Roth, age 90, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his daughter’s residence in Tiffin, Ohio.
Born July 21, 1936, Phil is the son of the late George and Blanche Roth.
Phil graduated from Uhrichsville High School and served as class president. On April 8, 1956, he married Nancy Eichel.
Phil was employed by Ohio Bell later called AT&T/Ameritech for 42 years prior to his retirement after which the company had to hire two persons to fill his job. Phil loved his work as a splicer and missed less than a hand full of days during that time. He was a hard worker and a great provider for his family.
Phil was a member of the Gnadenhutten Moravian Church and previously a member of the Gnadenhutten United Methodist Church having sang in both choirs over the years, served on various committees as well as Trustee. Phil was also a former City Councilman for the Village of Gnadenhutten for 8 years. He also was a prior member of the Gnadenhutten Masonic Lodge.
Phil and his late wife, Nancy, enjoyed permanent camping for 19 years at Tappan Lake where he was known as “The Mayor” and where he developed long lasting friendships.
Phil was an avid card player, having played in various card clubs and Euchre tournaments. In his younger years, Phil enjoyed repairing lawn mowers which helped out his family members many times. An avid sports fan, Phil loved following the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Guardians, and Ohio State, as well as watching NASCAR races. Over the last five years, Phil loved spending time at his family’s campground at Lake Erie, watching the water, talking with people, and keeping track of the catch of the day.
Phil will be lovingly missed by his children Mark (Jill) Roth, Amy (Mark) Somodi; grandchildren Cory Roth (Chelsea Williams), Casey (Gary) Chowns, Callie (Brandon) Cherry, Clark (Lacey) Roth, Jerod (Shonna) Roth, Brooke (Josh) Piccin, Megan (Austin) Schultz, Lauren (William) Sims, Nicholas Somodi (Raegan Harder) and Kara Somodi, along with 14 great grandchildren.
Phil is preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Nancy Roth; son, Kevin Roth; siblings Raymond (Nancy) Roth, Paul (Thyra) Roth, Jean (Earl) Reifenschneider, and Neil Roth and a great grandson Beau Schultz.
Funeral services for Phil will be held at 3 p.m., on Monday, September 14, 2026, at the Uhrich-Hostettler English Funeral Home, Inc., in Uhrichsville, with the Pastor Dave Geyer officiating. Burial will follow at Gnadenhutten Clay Union Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 1-3 p.m., (two hours prior to services) on Monday, September 14, 2026, at the funeral home.
