The Ohio Legislature is considering the gas tax holiday proposal to help ease prices at the pump.
Companion bills introduced Monday would suspend Ohio’s gas tax for 90 days. Both chambers are scheduled to vote on the bills Wednesday.
Governor Mike DeWine says lawmakers are looking for ways to provide relief to drivers. The biggest benefit would go to people who spend a lot of time on the road.
If approved, the tax holiday would save drivers 38.5 cents a gallon on gasoline and 47 cents a gallon on diesel. State leaders estimate the average driver would save just over $80 during the three-month suspension.
However, the proposal is expected to cost the state between $640 million and $700 million in transportation funding over the three months.
