A Harrison County farmstead is recognized on Ohio’s historical registry.
The dedication ceremony and unveiling of the historical marker plaque was held over the weekend at the Law Reed Huss Farm, which was founded in 1846.
Bill Huss, a descendant and President and Chairman of the foundation, says they are actively working to preserve the seventeen buildings, including a farmhouse, summer kitchen, coal house, milk house, tool house, and several barns.
“The main history of this farm is about the J.Q. Law family. He was married to Ella Scott. It really goes from J.Q. Law took over the farm in 1870 until he died in 1927 and the life of his children. He had six children which lived here until 1964.”
Huss says the farm supported sheep production and bred work horses, some being prize winners.
“Largely it is the story of Civil War to the Great Depression to World War II. Harrison County was a very prosperous county. It was the largest sheep producer in Ohio. It was the sixth largest county for sheep production in the country. Also, major horse production. Raised prize-winning Percheron horses.”
Among the speakers was Senior Lecturer at OSU-Agricultural Technical Institute Robby Frutchy.
“Not only are we celebrating the plaque here today, we’re also celebrating education, history, preservation, and also the future generations. The best part about these foundations is we have these historic capsules that the students can come back and experience to not only understand where we’re going but where we’ve been and how did we get to where we are today.”
Todd Kleismit, Executive Director of the America 250-Ohio Commission, notes the Ohio Historical Marker program began in 1953.
“It is the kind of program that allows local communities to identify, honor, and commemorate the important people, places, and events that have contributed to the past and share those stories in a visible and lasting way.”
