A New Philadelphia West Elementary fourth-grade teacher is being recognized for her quick thinking and life-saving actions after a student began choking on a donut in her classroom.

School board president Jennifer Schrock and others praised Sarah Custer during this week’s Board of Education meeting for performing the Heimlich maneuver on student Brogan Rogers, helping save his life during the frightening incident.

Brogan joined in the recognition by presenting Custer with a Certificate of Achievement, as read by Superintendent Carole Sutton.

The district also praised Custer on social media, calling her a superhero and expressing gratitude for her courage, quick thinking and care for her students.
