A 46-year-old Canton-area man was taken into custody early Friday near Bolivar Dam.
A release from the Tuscarawas Sheriff’s Office says the search began after a Lawrence Township resident reported the man knocking on his door, and a second caller told dispatch she had dropped him off at a Wilkshire Hills gas station, and that he had been in a crisis, possibly under the influence of a drug, and potentially suicidal.
While searching the area, deputies heard multiple gunshots and believed at least some rounds were fired in their direction, prompting assistance from the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the sheriff’s drone team.
According to the release, the suspect later walked toward law enforcement, complied with orders to get on the ground, and was arrested without incident while carrying a small semi-automatic handgun.
Authorities say he appeared impaired and claimed someone was chasing him, and prosecutors are reviewing possible charges including attempted felonious assault, aggravated menacing, and using a weapon while intoxicated. A name is being withheld pending the filing of formal charges.
