A police chase in New Philadelphia Tuesday reached over 100 miles per hour and damaged a police cruiser, but no one was hurt and the suspect is in custody.
Police Chief Tessa Pohovey says an officer ran the plates of a blue Ford hatchback around 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday on South Broadway near state Route 250. After the officer discovered the owner had an active felony warrant the suspect immediately fled. The sheriff’s office and state highway patrol joined in the pursuit. Pohovey says luckily, traffic was light.
The driver was able to avoid spike strips before police blocked him in with their vehicles on I-77 about 20 minutes after the chase started. One cruise was hit but the damage was minor.
Pohovey says the suspect gave up after that. She identified him as 33-year-old William Kislingbury of New Philadelphia.
He was supposed to report to the Tuscarawas County Jail on Monday to serve 31 days for violating a protection order. When he didn’t report, the court ordered a warrant for his arrest.
Kislingbury now faces a new felony charge of failure to comply. Pohovey anticipates more.
