Mary Alice Reporting –

Local pools will be seeking certified lifeguards once the summer season hits and training will be held at the Tuscarawas County YMCA.

The spring session will be Mondays and Wednesday from 4:30 to 8:30pm, from February 19th to April 3rd. Registration for Y members begins February 12th and all others on the 14th.

Interested candidates must be 16 years old before the last scheduled day of class, with a birth certificate and state identification required on the first day.

Those attending will need to demonstrate strong swimming through a skills test on the first night, says Aquatics Director Stacy Harlan.

“We want someone who’s responsible, who’s caring and who’s going to want to help people. Good personal skills and being able to have conversation with folks. Sometimes you have to deliver bad news I’m sorry you can’t do this. Also, good judgement [and] think pretty quickly on the fly.”

Those who complete the YMCA Lifeguard course will obtain multiple certifications.

“With that certification they will get not only their lifeguarding that’s good for two year, they also get a basic life support, CPR, AED, they also get basic first aid, and emergency oxygen administration certification. So, it’s an all-inclusive class.”

The training course cost is $175 for members and all others it’s $250. Financial assistance is available through a scholarship. Anyone with questions can contact the aquatics director, Harlan, at 330-364-5511 or at stacy@tuscymca.org.

Local pools for possible employment include Cy Young, Tuscora Park, the Uhrichsville Water Park, and Dover City Park.
