Alberta C. “Birdie” Liegl, 99, of Dover passed away at Community Hospice Truman House on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 following a period of declining health.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 23, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Cecelia (Michel) Goetz.  Birdie married the love of her life, George J. Liegl, on September 30, 1961.

She was employed at Unertl Optical Company in Pittsburgh from 1951 to 1961.  She operated her own custom drapery business for many years, later doing upholstery services from home, and was a homemaker to her family.  She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dover and greatly enjoyed working with the flowers in their yard.

In addition to her husband George, she is survived by a daughter Rose Marie (Bill) Shutt of Florence, Kentucky; son George Liegl, III of Dundee; three grandchildren, Joel Shutt, Joanna (Jesse) Harris, and John Mark Shutt; great-grandson Jase Harris; brothers Eugene Goetz of Maryland, Kenneth Goetz of South Carolina; sisters Rosemary Hafner, Henrietta Rudolph, and Geraldine Minehart all of Pennsylvania.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by seven sisters Joan Noland, Mary Noland, Leona Goetz, Elizabeth Goetz, Eva Goetz, twins Agnes and Veronica Goetz, and daughter Mary Ann Liegl.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dover on Monday, August 21, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Jimmy Hatfield as Celebrant.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Calvary Cemetery in Dover.  Friends may call at Smith-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek on Sunday, August 20, 2023 from 5 to 7 pm.
