The Tuscarawas County Historical Society held its 44th Annual Founders Day Banquet and Zeisberger Heckewelder Awards on Tuesday.
Three individuals and one organization received recognition for their contribution to the county, making it a better place to live. The Tuscarawas County Historical Society first presented the prestigious award in 1981.
Medal winners include Greg Bair, who recently ended his service as the President of the Dover Historical Society Board of Trustees after almost 20 years and served over 16 years as a councilman for the City of Dover.
Joshua Comptom, a Dover elementary art teacher, recently released an album, “The Big Trail & Other Ballads of the Tuscarawas,” and it includes 20 tracks of original songs inspired by the early history of Tuscarawas County.
Another recognition went to Scott Gordon, who has served the community of Zoar for many years and is a direct descendant of the first child born in the village in 1819. After becoming a volunteer in the village his first project was restoring the Zoar Garden using handwritten diaries, and in 2016, served as Zoar’s mayor.
The final recognition was the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation, formed in the late 1980’s and considered as the states most historic camp after celebrating 100 years in 2020. The non-profit foundation has continued to acquire land and improve the camp facilities. A museum and new lodge have also been constructed.
