Blanca Eduarda Gertz Negron Groff – Edy Groff, age 78, passed peacefully into God’s Glory on February 2, 2022, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Her beloved husband, Larry, was by her side.
Edy was born on August 15th, 1943 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to the late Eduardo Gertz and Alida Negron Gertz. A 1962 graduate of Miami Edison High School in Miami, Florida, Edy volunteered for and went on to serve honorably in the US Army (Women’s Army Corps) as a Crypto Analyst. Edy met Larry while they were both serving in the US Army, and after marrying on December 6, 1963, and completing their military service obligations, they took up residence in Newcomerstown, what Edy fondly called her little Brigadoon.
Edy was an avid gardener, writer, artist, and an active member of the Valley View Baptist Church, Friends of the Newcomerstown Library, Newcomerstown Historical Society, and a contributor to the Newcomerstown News. Most importantly, Edy is remembered for her infectious passion and delightful laugh, which epitomized her zeal for life and vibrant personality.
Edy is survived by her husband of 58 years, Larry Groff of Newcomerstown, Ohio; her children, Beth (Scott) Ballentine of Uhrichsville, Ohio, and Rob (April Sandifer) Groff of Satellite Beach, Florida; six grandchildren, Jarhett (April Johnson) Groff, Miles Ballentine, Leighanna Lucas, Ashley Ballentine, Jadyn Groff, and Kyrah Groff; five great-grandchildren, Asher Groff, Arlo Lucas, Beckham Lucas, Scarlett Groff, Evelyn Groff; her stepmother, Maria Gertz; sisters, Carmen Gertz Gonzalez, Caroline Gertz Roberts, Kathy Gertz Padron, Patty Gertz Perez; brothers, Eddie Gertz and Leo Gertz; her nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends. Edy was preceded in death by her sisters, Zelide and Lucy Gertz.
A graveside service celebrating Edy’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the Pleasant View Church Cemetery, 7556 Church Road SW, Newcomerstown, Ohio.
