Residents are asked to spare an hour in the month of August and attend at least one of several blood drives planned locally.
Vitalant Communications Manager Maya Santana says the need for blood donations remains high, especially through Labor Day, as individuals are often busy during the summer months.
“This creates a critical gap between the higher demand for blood and the lower number of available donors making the summer season a crucial time for people to come out, volunteer an hour of their time, and donor blood.”
Every 2 seconds, someone in the US needs a blood transfusion. Santana explains this could be from a trauma injury, routine surgeries, managing chronic illness, or for those receiving cancer treatment.
“One donation could help save multiple lives and since blood can’t be manufactured or supplied long-term, hospitals rely on a steady flow of donors to maintain a safe and regular supply.”
Details on the different drives, eligibility requirements, and how to make an appointment can be done at vitalant.org.
