Mary Alice Reporting –

A decrease in contact numbers were observed across Ohio during the New Year weekend reporting period.

Statewide there were six crashes that resulted in seven fatalities, a decrease from last year when 13 fatalities were reported.

At the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s New Philadelphia Post, Sgt. Clinton Armstrong says mild weather contributed to less crashes.

“Overall, we had 140 contacts with the motoring public. We did have four OVI arrests, which is the same as what it was last year, and our crashes our down from last year. Last year, we had 14 compared to five of this year.”

Armstrong adds that continued education on various campaigns, such as Drive Sober Get Pulled Over, also is a positive factor.

Other statewide numbers consisted of over 3,000 traffic enforcement contacts; including 272 OVI arrests, over 100 distracted driving, and more than 400 safety belt citations.
