With the May primary over, local candidates are looking to November for at least one contested race and a couple without enough candidates to fill the openings.

In Dover, five candidates are listed for three Council-at-large seats, although one of them has withdrawn. Tuscarawas County Democratic Party Chairman Mike DiDonato had filed to run prior to a May 6th deadline. However, the party announced this week that he has withdrawn. The Democratic Central Committee will meet May 29 th to nominate someone to take his place on the ballot. Anyone interested can attend the meeting at the Democratic headquarters in New Philadelphia or email the party at tuscdems@gmail.com.

Other candidates include incumbents Republican John Correll and Democrat Perci Garner, but not current Council member Julie Leggett. Board of Elections Director Brian Swartzwelder says she filed but then withdrew petitions in February.

Seeking their first term on Dover Council are Republicans David Jones and Zachary Wallick.

In Uhrichsville, there are three at-large seats up for grabs but only two candidates who filed. Dennison has the same problem except it has four openings and only three candidates. Newcomerstown has one candidate for four openings. Several candidates will be unopposed, including incumbent ward Council members in New Philadelphia, incumbent Council presidents in Dover and Uhrichsville, and candidates for treasurer in Dover and New Philadelphia.

Write-in candidates in the partisan races can still file before August 25th. Candidates for non-partisan races in the villages and townships must file petitions by August 6th.
