A popular tour is coming back to Newcomerstown and pre-registration is required.
The Newcomerstown Historical Society is helping put on a guided cemetery tour “Stories in Stone” on Sunday, October 4th.
Society member Craig Collins says this is an opportunity to explore history through 10 monument checkpoints where someone will portray a figure from Newcomerstown.
“I was involved in that; I portrayed a Newcomerstown businessman from the late 1800’s up through about 1950. He also had three children all of whom died before he did as youngsters.”
The 1:30pm event will be held at the East State Street Cemetery, starting at the flagpole. Small groups will be formed and be spaced by 15 minutes for a guided tour that will include tales about Elizabeth Mulvane – a Civil War nurse, Albert Zimmerman – a local lumberyard man, and Benjamin Miller – survivor of the infamous Andersonville Prison in Georgia during the Civil War. Costumed storytellers will also include Adam Beers – a Civil War surgeon, and The Craig’s – a couple who ran the Underground Railroad through town.
Afterwards, individuals are invited to the Olde Main Street Museum for refreshments and a story of when Carrie Nation busted up Sam Douglas Bar.
