Charles Loren Cottrell, 68, of Uhrichsville, passed away suddenly on Saturday, January 7, 2023, while enjoying what he loved most in life, spending time with his family and friends in nature. Born October 9, 1954, in Dennison, he was the only child of the late Charles F. and Bernice L. (Norman) Cottrell.
A lifelong Twin City resident, Charlie was a proud Dennison “Southsider” and 1972 graduate of Claymont High School. Most recently, he had attended Park Christian Church in Dennison, having previously been a member of the former Grant Street United Methodist Church. He was employed by Associated Grocers in Dennison and Fleming Foods in Navarre before working for Claymont City Schools Maintenance Department until his retirement in 2020. He was a member of Teamsters Local #92 and OAPSE Local #390.
On October 28, 1978, he married Wendy Sue (Iler) Cottrell who survives him. They were blessed with three children, Erica Sue Cottrell who died in infancy, and Aaron Charles (Veronica) Cottrell and Ashley Sue (Derek) Grimm who survives him along with grandchildren, Sydnee (Darran) Warner, Solomon Peters, Samantha (fiancé, Austen) Peters, Heston Cranmer, Caroline Cottrell, Cole Cottrell, and Tinley Grimm; and great-grandchildren, Lena, and Ryder Warner. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Rick Iler; niece, Abbie Iler; nephew, James Iler; and a host of dear friends, including his hunting buddies who were like brothers to him and his son’s friends to whom he was like a second father. In addition to his parents and infant daughter, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Frances Iler, and father-in-law, Ken Iler.
Charlie loved everything about the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who was a longtime member of the Hey Jack Sportsman’s Club, the Twin City Sportsman’s Club, and the Harrison County Coonhunters Club. He enjoyed many summer days fishing with his wife, Wendy but was truly in his element while spending time in the woods. Among Charlie’s greatest joys was sharing the friendships and traditions of each new hunting season with his son and a regular group of great friends. He loved hunting coon, deer, turkey, rabbits, and squirrels, and raised and trained his own coonhound and rabbit dogs for many years. He enjoyed gardening, canning, berry picking, and even running a few cattle. Charlie will be forever cherished by his wife, children, and grandchildren for the important part he played in their lives. He enjoyed attending, and supporting all their events, and readily made himself available anytime he was needed.
