Charlie S. McKinney Sr., age 77, of Dover, Ohio, died early Friday morning, March 20, 2026, in Ohio’s Lifecare Hospice Truman House at New Philadelphia.  His passing follows a courageous 15-month battle with illness while in the care of his daughter, Michelle.

He was born November 2, 1948, in Dennison, Ohio and was the son of the late Donald and Florence “Flo” (Sullivan) McKinney.  His wife, the late Mary Kay (Leggett) McKinney, whom he married March 16, 1991, passed away on November 16, 2015. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister Violet “Rena” Applegarth and an infant brother, Charles McKinney.

Charlie retired in 2014 as the Supervisor of Starlight Enterprises in New Philadelphia after serving in that capacity for 22 years. He continued working for Starlight after retirement as their Distribution Manager. He was a U.S. Army Veteran who served in the DMZ in Korea during the Viet Nam War Era. He was a member of the Tuscarawas County Y.M.C.A., and a Life Member of the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445.  He was fond of watching sports of all varieties and loved to read science fiction novels. His favorite activities involved spending his hours with his children and grandchildren. 

He is survived by his six children, Melissa Goodwin of New Philadelphia, Mrs. Michelle R. (Dave) Wiandt of Strasburg, OH, Charlie S. (Lisa) McKinney Jr. of Dover, OH, Tammy Dobbs of Strasburg, Scott McKinney of Dover, and Tom Vosick of Mineral City, OH, two brothers, Donald D. (Dianna) McKinney of Goshen, OH, and James McKinney of Denver, Colorado, and thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be observed on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, from 6 until 8:00 P.M. in the Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville. A graveside service consisting of Military Honors presented by the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445 will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday March 25 in the Leavittsville Cemetery where interment will follow.
